In this section we outline FSC Teak, the Perum Perhutani plantations in Indonesia, and how TracElite and the Tropical Forest Trust play a part in environmental issues.
FSC is an independent, non-profit, non governmental organisation (NGO), founded in 1993.
It is an association of members from Environmental groups, the Timber trade, the Forestry profession, Community forestry groups and other Organisations from around the world. FSC runs a global forest certification scheme which ensures that timber produced in 'certified' forests can be traced from the forest of origin to the end user i.e. you and me.
It promotes responsible forestry through certification and clear timber labelling. All FSC labelled timber and timber products come from forests independently certified as being responsibly managed to the highest environmental, social and economic standards.
Perum Perhutani Perum Perhutani is the largest government run Teak plantation in Java, Indonesia. They have now begun using
TracElite, in association with the
Tropical Forest Trust, as a part of their Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification qualification activities. TracElite delivers verifiable back-to-stump traceability for timber movements to help reduce illegal logging by providing evidence that timber is from verified legal sources and by providing specific information on the original source of the timber
Costs And AvailabilityConstructing Teak Garden Furniture exclusively from FSC approved timber is an environmentally sound proposal however, the cost to buy is about 50% more than timber bought from Government run plantations. It is also widely accepted that there is not a consistent and constant supply of FSC Teak in order for commercial businesses to use FSC exclusively in production.
